San Francisco, Jan 9, 2010 – Eureka, CA News: 6.5 magnitude earthquake struck Eureka California Saturday afternoon around 4:30 p.m. about 22 miles from Ferndale, shaking towers south of the Oregon border and turning off power in several coastal communities.
No major injuries, according to authorities in Eureka, Ferndale and other area communities.

The 6.5 magnitude earthquake caused stucco to fall off City Hall and broke several shop windows, strewing the downtown streets with shaterred glass, according to Police in Ferndale.
The earthquake was felt as far as in Capitola in central California for south, and central Oregon for north, Richard Buckmaster, USGS geophysicist says.
There a chance that another quake hitting the area over the next week…
“There’s also a 78 percent chance of a strong and potentially damaging aftershock magnitude-5 or larger over the same period. The earthquake probabilities are based on statistical observations of past earthquakes in California and are not predictions, the USGS said.”
U.S. Geological Survey says that it appears as if six aftershocks have struck Eureka and Ferndale California since the major shaiking began.
